Results from the Arizona Fall League game played Thursday, November 10th.
A shaky first resulted in Glendale’s 3-1 Thursday afternoon defeat to Surprise (13-12).
Five of the eight hits and one of the three walks given up by Austin Gomber in five innings came in the first. Three of those five hits went for extra bases – a lead-off triple followed immediately by an RBI double and a later ground-rule double that plated the final run. Overall, Gomber (L, 4-1) threw 85 pitches, 35 for strikes and struck out two.
Rowan Wick followed Gomber to the mound and tossed two shutout frames. A free pass issued to his first batter was erased when battery mate Carson Kelly nailed the baserunner in an attempted steal of second in what turned out to be a one-two-three sixth.
Wick again began the next inning by issuing a base-on-balls only to watch the runner doubled off first when the next Saguaros hitter lined out to second. A swinging K plus a wild pitch put the next man on first. He advanced to second on a single but the threat ended on a line out to shortstop Paul DeJong.
Kelly and DeJong were two of seven Desert Dogs with one hit each. Both players went 1-for-4 as the number three and seven hitters, respectively. Right fielder Harrison Bader was hitless in three at bats as the fifth place hitter. Defensively, DeJong took part in one of two double plays by Glendale (12-14).
Friday’s game: at Scottsdale (11-15), 6:35 pm MST, Francis Martes (0-1, 4.73) (HOU)
