Glendale 5 at Scottsdale 2

Harrison Bader’s big Friday night at the plate boosted Glendale (13-14) to a 5-2 road victory over Scottsdale.

Hot-hitting Bader, the only Desert Dog with a multi-hit performance, garnered three of his team’s eight hits.  The right fielder went 3-for-5, including a two-run double and a stolen base, his fourth.  The double came in the seventh, scoring Carson Kelly and Garrett Stubbs (HOU) and expanded Glendale’s lead from 3-2 to the final score.  Over his last three games, Bader is 5-for-12, with six of his 15 AFL RBI.

Kelly, his squad’s designated hitter, reached base after working a free pass with two down.  A single by Stubbs moved Kelly up 90 feet, putting the Desert Dogs’ clean-up hitter in position to score easily on Bader’s line drive double to left.  Kelly singled to open the ninth, his sole hit. Reaching base twice in five plate appearances raised his fall league OBP to .392.

Glendale starter Francis Martes (HOU) picked up his first win against a loss, giving up two tallies, one earned, on four hits and a walk over four.  Ryan Sherriff tossed a clean fifth, facing the Scorpions’ nine, one and two batters.  The lefty issued a one-out free pass but the runner was caught trying to steal second and earned his first hold. It was only the third time in eight AFL appearances that Sherriff was not scored upon, as his ERA was lowered to 6.48.

Saturday’s game:  vs. Scottsdale (11-16), 12:35 pm MST, Nolan Sanburn (2-0, 4.66) (CWS)
