Second-place Glendale (15-15) staved off elimination with a 1-0 road victory over first-place Surprise (16-13) Tuesday afternoon.  The Desert Dogs trail the Saguaros by 1 ½ games with an elimination number of one.

With each team held to just five hits, the visitors sandwiched two first-inning singles around a wild pitch that put center fielder Andrew Stevenson (WSH) in position to score on designated hitter Nick Tanielu’s (HOU) two-out single.  Stevenson singled once in three at bats while Tanielu went 2-for-4.

The reigning AFL Pitcher of the Week, the Nationals’ Austin Voth, blanked the opposition over five frames, yielding two hits and three walks for his third victory in five decisions.  Dodgers’ righty Joe Broussard worked around a one-out single in the ninth, earning his fourth save.  Twins’ southpaw Stephen Gonsalves (L, 0-2) took the tough loss despite striking out six over three frames.  Gonzalves gave up three hits and that crucial wild pitch.

No St. Louis prospects took part in the contest.

Wednesday’s game:  at Mesa (16-14), 12:35 pm MST, Austin Gomber (4-1, 2.60)
