In the Arizona Fall League, Rowan Wick is squeezing every extra day possible out of his first full season as a pitcher.
This is important since his service clock continues to tick. Because the 24-year-old was a position player for the first 3 1/2 seasons, he had much less development time on the mound before a crucial decision is required regarding his future.
The St. Louis Cardinals must make the call on whether or not the hard-thrower will receive one of their coveted 40-man roster spots. If not, Wick will be eligible for December 8’s Rule 5 Draft. Even if the Cards decide not to protect him, they would not want to lose him to another organization, either.
All Wick can do is continue to pitch and leave the business decisions to the front office. As the season opened, the right-hander dominated in the Florida State League after a big promotion from the Gulf Coast League. Next was an uneven introduction to the Double-A Texas League and a continuation of his season in the Arizona Fall League.
In the following exclusive interview, Wick reviewed his progress as a pitcher and looks ahead to what may be next.
