Welcome back to The Cardinal Nation’s weekly summary of St. Louis Cardinals players competing in winter leagues around the world. We conclude the Week 5 pair of reports with pitching.
The 2016 Arizona Fall League prospect showcase is now complete. This is the final week those player results will appear here.
The four leagues which join Cuba in the annual Caribbean Series in February are all underway – including the Dominican League (LIDOM), Mexico (LMP) and Venezuela (LVBP) and Puerto Rico League (PWL).
Springfield teammates Kevin Herget and Robby Rowland are pitching in Puerto Rico, Herget for Mayaguez and Rowland with Caguas.
Palm Beach reliever Kyle Grana had been working in relief for Navojoa in Mexico, but after two weeks of inaction, it seems his winter ball stint is over.
Cardinals farmhands pitching in Venezuela include relievers Pedro Echemendia and David Oca. Starter Kurt Heyer was deactivated, so this will be his final report.
Pitching stats - season
Following are pitching stats for the winter ball season through November 20, sorted by ERA.
Pitching standouts - season
Rowand leads the ERA board, though his walk rate is concerning. Herget is off to a pretty good stretch in Puerto Rico.
Heyer had a nice five-start stint for the winter with the only concern a few low strikeout rate. Yet, his K rate is over double that of Echemendia.
Looking at the AFL campaigns, Gomber dominated, finishing second in the AFL in starter ERA and first in innings pitched and strikeouts. ERA is about all that is similar between relievers Littrell and Wick. The lefty had superior peripherals compared to the hard-throwing righty, including WHIP, batting average against, strikeout rate and walk rate. Sherriff was fine in strikeouts, but too many hits allowed and too many walks came home to roost.
Following are pitching stats for the last week, sorted by ERA.
Pitching standouts – week
Four of the eight hurlers who pitched did not allow a run last week. The three relievers each had one-inning outings, with Echemendia pitching three times, Sherriff appearing twice and Wick once. None of the trio had particularly impressive peripherals.
Rowland got into trouble with walks. Of note is Herget getting three save opportunities, though he only converted two.
Our Pitcher of the Week is an easy call. In his AFL finale, Gomber struck out seven over six innings on two hits and no walks.
