As St. Louis Cardinals fans already know, the club announced on Thursday a four-player trade with the Atlanta Braves, acquiring three prospects from the Braves in exchange for left-handed pitcher Jaime Garcia. The three new Cardinals are right-handed pitchers John Gant and Chris Ellis and second baseman Luke Dykstra.
Not having seen them perform, I went to an old friend to get the in-depth scoop on the trio. Bill Shanks has followed the Braves for almost as long as I have covered the Cardinals. He hosts a four-hour sports show daily for the two radio stations comprising Middle Georgia ESPN Radio and is also a columnist for the Macon Telegraph and Macon.com.
In the following interview of almost 10 minutes duration, Bill discusses the chaotic Atlanta rotation in 2016, how Gant had a chance, but lost it due to injury and how Ellis tore up Double-A, but stumbled in Triple-A when Atlanta was still looking for help. We close with an overview of Dykstra, as well.
On Friday afternoon at 4:25 p.m. EST, I will be joining Bill’s show to discuss Garcia with his Braves audience.
