Welcome back to The Cardinal Nation’s weekly summary of St. Louis Cardinals players competing in winter leagues around the world. We conclude the Week 6 pair of reports with pitching.
The 2016 Arizona Fall League prospect showcase is now complete. Final player results were in our Week 5 Report.
The four leagues which join Cuba in the annual Caribbean Series in February continue – the Dominican League (LIDOM), Mexico (LMP) and Venezuela (LVBP) and Puerto Rico League (PWL).
With the completion of the Arizona Fall League, we are down to just four active pitchers. Also Kurt Heyer and Kyle Grana have finished their winter ball stints.
Springfield teammates Kevin Herget and Robby Rowland are pitching in Puerto Rico, Herget for Mayaguez and Rowland with Caguas.
Cardinals farmhands pitching in Venezuela include relievers Pedro Echemendia and David Oca.
Pitching stats - season
Following are pitching stats for the winter ball season through December 1, sorted by ERA.
Pitching standouts - season
Rowand leads the ERA board. Though his walk rate is concerning, it is coming down. Herget is also doing well in Puerto Rico.
Given Echemendia’s shaky peripherals, it is surprising his ERA is not higher. Oca hasn’t fared well, but hasn’t had too much of a chance, either.
Following are pitching stats for the last week, sorted by ERA.
Pitching standouts – week
Three of the four hurlers did not allow a run last week, though one, Oca, did not pitch. While Rowland, Herget and Echemendia each pitched in three games, their innings pitched ranged from four to just 1 2/3.
Touched for two runs makes Echemendia’s line look ugly. Herget allowed three hits, but no runs in his two frames.
Our Pitcher of the Week is an easy call. Rowland struck out six over four scoreless innings on just one hit and one walk, continuing his fine work to date in Puerto Rico.
