Though his formal title is Director of Player Development for the St. Louis Cardinals, Gary LaRocque’s informal title of farm director is immediately recognizable by most baseball fans.
The Connecticut native and North Carolina resident is entering his 10th year with the Cardinals and 42nd in baseball after long stints as player, scout, coach, manager and executive with the Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Mets organizations.
Unfortunately for Cardinals fans, LaRocque’s one-hour presentation on Day 1 of the Cardinals Winter Warm-Up fan festival was a victim of the weather. Instead, he was kind enough to answer my questions via phone.
Subjects began with a recap of the 2016 system, followed by a look ahead to 2017. Gary discussed player and coaching promotions, spring training plans, 40-man roster impacts, international growth competition, players changing roles and positions and much more.
In fact, he spent over 40 minutes in the kind of in-depth interview you will not find anywhere other than The Cardinal Nation. Here is the first half, with the remainder to follow on Friday.
