Sidelined earlier this spring with lat soreness, St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Trevor Rosenthal is deemed not ready to open the season. Sam Tuivailala will make his first Opening Day roster as a result.

St. Louis Cardinals press release

The St. Louis Cardinals announced today (Thursday) that they have placed right-handed pitchers John Gant (right groin), Alex Reyes (right elbow surgery) and Trevor Rosenthal (right lat strain) on the 10-day disabled list, along with left-handed pitcher Tyler Lyons (right knee). The Cardinals recalled right-handed pitcher Sam Tuivailala from Memphis (AAA) to join their pitching staff.

These transactions give the team 28 players remaining in Major League camp, including two non-roster invitees.

Brian Walton’s take

Not 24 hours after congratulating myself for predicting all 25 initial members of the Cardinals roster, we learn not only that Rosenthal is injured again (still?), but will not be ready for Opening Day.

Having reported to camp with hopes of starting, but more likely slated into an Andrew Miller-like long relief role, the 26-year-old’s spring was instead marred by injury. Rosenthal was previously out with lat soreness from March 4 until returning on March 16, when he threw two scoreless innings. The right-hander followed up with three run-free frames on March 20. His most recent game action was two innings on March 24, during which he allowed one run.

Tuivailala, 23, first reached St. Louis in September 2014, but this will be his first Opening Day assignment in the majors. He had been optioned out on March 22.

The other three DL moves – Reyes, Gant and Lyons, were expected.

The two non-roster invitees remaining in camp are infielder Wilfredo Tovar and catcher Alberto Rosario. The identity of the remaining 40-man roster player who supposedly needs to be cut to reach 25 is unknown since everyone else has already been optioned out. I think the team’s count is high by one.
