Manager Steve Turco and White team players (Brian Walton/The Cardinal Nation)

How St. Louis Cardinals players are organized in Extended Spring Training Camp in Jupiter, Florida.

How St. Louis Cardinals players are organized in Extended Spring Training Camp in Jupiter, Florida.

Before I recap Tuesday’s action at St. Louis Cardinals extended spring training camp – and there is a lot to report - I need to show which players are on which working rosters. As is the custom, the 38 pitchers and 44 position players currently in camp are split into two teams, whether playing the Mets, Marlins, Nationals or Astros or each other.

The Red team is managed by State College skipper Joe Kruzel with generally the more experienced players. The White team is led by the Gulf Coast League’s Steve Turco.

Remember these are point-in-time snapshots which will continue to evolve over the next month.

First up are the rehabbers. The key is that these five are not cleared to play in games and not included in the 82 total cited above. Other rehabbing players who have progressed to game action, five pitchers and a hitter, are listed down among their position groupings.

Note that Luke Weaver is NOT here.

Now, here are the pitchers. Four hurlers on full-season disabled lists are noted among the Red pitchers. That would seem to be a good sign in their recovery process.

I will post about starters Marco Gonzales and Johan Oviedo among others later today. The only name among the relievers that was a mild surprise is Ronald Medrano, whose role change may be due to having to battle with injuries.

Next are the catchers and infielders. Note that shortstop Delvin Perez is with the Red team while more experienced shortstop Jose Martinez is with the White. I had also expected to see Mason Katz (Springfield 2016) listed somewhere and am following up on that.

Finally are the outfielders. First off, note that Nick Plummer is playing for the Red team. He told me he arrived on Sunday with Tuesday his second game. More on that in the upcoming game report.

The Red team includes Vince Jackson and Austin Wilson, both recently returned from full-season clubs – Peoria and Palm Beach, respectively.

On the White roster, newly-signed JD Crowe is listed along with an unexpected name, DSL outfielder Andres Luna. On the other side of the coin, Victor Garcia is not listed, though I expected him to be. Again, I am following up.

Update: I confirmed with a Cardinals official that the Garcia-Luna shift is official. Based on what I saw of Garcia here in the US during regular spring training, my sense is that the player development staff decided that the outfielder is not ready for US play. The now-17-year-old from Venezuela received $1.5 million to sign last July and will start his official professional career in the 2017 Dominican Summer League.
