The skipper of the St. Louis Cardinals high-A club in Palm Beach discusses progress in player development over the first month of the 2017 season.

While much has been and will continue to be written about the star-studded rotation of the Double-A Springfield Cardinals, it is not the only starting crew worthy of attention in the St. Louis Cardinals system.

One level down, at A-Advanced Palm Beach, manager Dann Bilardello and pitching coach Randy Niemann lead a group of hurlers with plenty of prospect power, as well. They range from international signees in Junior Fernandez and Derian Gonzalez, college-trained Connor Jones, Zac Gallen and Ryan Helsley plus a former high-school pick in Jake Woodford.

As I sat down with Bilardello for this chat before Wednesday’s twin-bill, his club was tied for first-place in the Florida State League East Division. The manager talks about how his pitchers - and hitters, too - have contributed to this start.

The skipper emphasizes the importance of player development while touching on his starting pitchers as well as offensive performers Magneuris Sierra, Edmundo Sosa, Casey Turgeon, Jeremy Martinez - and more.
