Next set of cuts Sunday

The Cardinals further trim the roster to 33

Despite hitting .313 in 32 at-bats this spring, infielder Scott Seabol was one of four players optioned to the minors Sunday. The others were less surprising - catcher Mike Mahoney, second baseman Bo Hart and outfielder John Gall.

16 position players and 17 pitchers remain in camp. Assuming a constant roster, the remaining decisions are narrowing to just a few.

If the team keeps 11 pitchers, then Cody McKay and Rick Ankiel would be the likely final position player cuts, with both Abraham Nunez and Hector Luna making the team. If 12 pitchers are kept, then Luna looks to be the odd man out.

Pitchers Mike Lincoln and Matt Morris are expected to begin the season on the disabled list. Starter Anthony Reyes will be sent down soon. That will leave 14 pitchers.

In the 12-pitcher scenario, two of these five would make the team. Otherwise, only one would come north. The final pitching combatants are Randy Flores, Randy Myers, Carmen Cali, plus non-roster invitees Kevin Jarvis and Bill Pulsipher.

Story update
A Monday Post-Dispatch story quotes Dave Duncan as saying the team will break camp with seven pitchers in the pen. That strongly implies that Luna and Nunez may both have made the team or another player will be added. It also means that only one of the five pitchers on the bubble will come north. P-D link
