Memphis wins Home Opener

Berger drives in game's only run; three Memphis pitchers combine for 4-hitter

Memphis, TN - RHP Chris Gissell tossed seven innings of two-hit shutout baseball, and DH Brandon Berger went 2x4 and drove in the only run of the game as Memphis downed Oklahoma 1-0 in the 2005 season opener Thursday night at AutoZone Park.

Gissell, who led the PCL with 14 wins last season, did not walk a batter and struck out eight, throwing 82 pitches, 59 for strikes. Oklahoma starter Jason Standridge matched him through five innings but ran into trouble in the sixth. 2B Bo Hart hit a one-out double, and LF John Gall and 3B Scott Seabol each walked to load the bases. Berger blooped a single into right field to score Hart with the game-winner. LHP Carmen Cali and RHP Toby Borland tossed a scoreless inning apiece to complete the shutout. Borland pitched into and out of trouble in the ninth, stranding the bases loaded to earn his first save.

The two teams face off again Friday as Oklahoma RHP Kameron Loe will oppose Memphis RHP Adam Wainwright in a 7:05 p.m. start.
