Swing Come Up Short In Season Opener

The Beloit Snappers quieted the aggressive Swing of the Quad Cities bats on Thursday night as the Swing were defeated, 2-1, in the season opener at Beloit's Pohlman Field. The Snappers carried a no-hitter into the eighth inning, when Swing first baseman Mike Ferris whacked an RBI double.

Dennis Dove was tremendous in a losing effort for the Swing, allowing two runs on four hits in six innings of work. After Dove was perfect through the first three innings, the Snappers came up with four singles in the fourth frame to break the scoreless tie. With men at second and third and one away, Johnny Woodard's opposite-field single to left plated two runs for the Snappers only tallies of the game.

The Swing cut the lead in half – and broke up Beloit's no-hit bid – in the top of the eighth inning. After Jake Mullinax drew a leadoff walk, Mike Ferris roped a double into the left-center gap. Running aggressively, Mullinax scored all the way from first with a headfirst slide. But the Swing couldn't advance Ferris any further, and trailed 2-1 at the end of eight innings.

Beloit's J.P. Martinez closed the door from there, striking out two men in a perfect ninth.

Ferris was the offensive star for Quad Cities, going 1-for-2 with the RBI double and a walk. Mullinax was the only other player to reach base.

On the mound, Justin Knoff struck out two in a scoreless inning of relief, and Kevin Ool pitched a perfect eighth frame.

The Snappers Anthony Swarzak held the Swing scoreless over six hitless innings. The second-round pick in last year's draft struck out eight men in his six frames for the victory.

The Swing have not won their season opener since a 1-0 victory at Clinton in 2001.
