Memphis, Tenn. – A leadoff walk to SS John Nelson in the bottom of the seventh inning led to a six-run rally and ultimately an 8-4 Redbirds win Friday night at AutoZone Park in front of a crowd of 8,299.
After Nelson's walk, C Mike Mahoney doubled to right field and CF Skip Schumaker singled up the middle to score the first run. 2B Bo Hart reached on a fielder's choice, and RF Pete Zoccolillo singled to right scoring Schumaker. After 3B Scott Seabol struck out, LF Brandon Berger hit a three-run bomb into the Memphis bullpen off RHP Keith Stamler. The home run was Berger's second of the night – he also hit a two-run shot off starter RHP Kameron Loe in the second inning. DH John Gall followed Berger with a single to center field. Gall stole second base and scored on a single by 1B Chris Duncan – his first hit and RBI of the season.
RHP Evan Rust was the beneficiary of the rally, picking up the win after tossing 1.2 innings of relief. Starter RHP Adam Wainwright pitched six innings, allowing four runs on nine hits with five strikeouts. Oklahoma reliever RHP John Wasdin took the loss, recording only one out while giving up four runs on three hits. RHP Jimmy Journell struck out the side in the ninth to seal the victory.
Oklahoma and Memphis will square off tomorrow night in game three of the four game series. Game time is set for 6:05 p.m.
