Redbirds lose 2-1 to Zephyrs in pitchers duel


Memphis, Tenn. – New Orleans scored twice before the Redbirds could record an out, and the Zephyrs held on for a 2-1 win over Memphis Wednesday afternoon at Auto Zone Park.

Leadoff hitter LF Tyrell Godwin doubled, CF Endy Chavez followed with a single to put runners at first and third, and 3B Brendan Harris knocked them both in with a single to center field. Memphis starter RHP Chris Gissell did not allow another run, but the Redbirds could only muster one run, on three consecutive singles in the fourth inning. RF Pete Zoccolillo hit an RBI single to score CF Skip Schumaker but was thrown out at the plate when he tried to score on a Chris Duncan base hit one out later. RHP Sun-Woo Kim earned the win for New Orleans, with 6.1 innings of one-run ball. Gissell took the loss, allowing both runs on six hits in his six innings, with three walks and five strikeouts. LHP Tyler Johnson and RHP Brad Thompson combined to throw three innings of one-hit relief.

The Redbirds (3-3) and Zephyrs meet again tomorrow at 7:05 p.m. in the finale of the three-game series and seven-game homestand. RHP Adam Wainwright (0-0) will toe the rubber against Zephyrs RHP Jon Rauch (0-0).
