Game Day Preview with Ray Mileur 04/17

Rolen snapped out of his early-season slump with a two-run homer and two singles Saturday at Miller Park against the Milwaukee Brewers. <p> Rolen, who entered the game batting .125 (4-for-32), homered in the first and hit singles in the fifth and seventh innings. The homer was his first of the season.

The Cardinals will go for their first series sweep today in Milwaukee, as they face the Brewers for the third time in as many days.

After a rough start for the Cardinals' starters, prior to this series only having one quality outing in the previous five games, starters Jeff Suppan and Chris Carpenter both led their team to victory.

In Friday night's game Jeff Suppan allowed only two hits after the third, both to Brady Clark, and struck out three and walked two in 8 1-3 innings.

Suppan was followed by Chris Carpenter on Saturday. Carpenter the ace of the staff last season, picked up his second win Saturday, leaving the game in the seventh inning with a 5-0 lead and the bases loaded. The line on Carpenter when it was all said and done, he gave up three runs and five hits in 6 2-3 innings. Carpenter walked three and struck out.

Today's game is the third of 16 games against their division rivals. St. Louis was 9-8 vs. Milwaukee last year, including a 4-3 mark at Miller Park...the Cardinals hold a 65-43 all-time mark against the Brewers.

The Cardinals send their best starter so far this season to the mound today in Jason Marquis.

Jason Marquis, (1-0 1.46 ERA) has allowed just a single run in each of his first two starts, faces off against Milwaukee's Victor Santos.

In Sunday afternoon's game, Jason's third start of the season and looking for his second win. Marquis earned his first win of ‘05 on Tues. vs. CIN when he went 6.1 innings in a 5-1 win, allowing one run on five hits...also drove in three runs with a bases-clearing triple.

He has faced Milwaukee seven times in his career (five starts) and has a 2-3 record, 3.71 his three games (two starts) at Miller Park is 0-1 with a 2.57 ERA...last season had a 1-3 record, 4.70 ERA in his four starts vs. the Brewers...his last start last season (10/2) was against MIL at home, a 5-1 loss.

WHO's HOT - David Eckstein is batting .300 with hits in six of his nine games and has reached base in all but one game this season. Yesterday, he didn't get a hit, but got on base with two walks.

WHO's NOT - Yadier Molina, went 0-4 yesterday and his hitting .038.
