Insiders Profile: Matt Scherer

Matt Scherer was the Cardinals' 16th round selection in the June, 2004 First-Year Player Draft.

Matt made his first start for Swing of the Quad Cities, Sunday and picked up his first win in eight appearances, dating back to July 26 when playing for Johnson City he defeated Burlington.

In that last win, Scherer struck out four over five innings of scoreless baseball allowing only two hits to Burlington.

In Sunday's action Scherer picked up the victory in his Quad Cities debut, allowing only one run on five hits in 5.1 innings. Scherer struck out six and walked only one.

Scherer, the 6'5" 230 pounder, wasting no time getting his first win under his belt, was just assigned to the Swing team on Saturday, taking the spot in the rotation from Justin Brown., Brown was moved to the bullpen when Scherer joined the team.

Scherer made his professional debut at Rookie-level Johnson City in 2004 going 2-5 with a 4.03 ERA in 13 outings (12 starts). He struck out 43 and walked only 16, for a very impressive strike out to walk ration in 60.1 innings of work.

The Swing's newest addition to the roster, attended Le Moyne College, in Syracuse, New York.

In three season at Le Moyne, Scherer went 12-7 with a 3.52 ERA while making 37 appearances, including 2 starts. Le Moyne qualified for the NCAA tournament after both the 2003 and 2004 seasons.

In May of last year, Sherer a Junior at Le Moyne was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Year, he was also named first-team all-conference, prior to being drafted by the Cardinals.

Scherer was just the second Le Moyne pitcher to earn the MAAC Pitcher of the Year award.

Scherer is expected to spend the rest of this season with the Swing of the Quad Cities.
