JUPITER, FL – Cody Haerther went 2 for 4 with a pair of doubles and an RBI and Cardinals starter Chris Lambert went five strong innings as the Cardinals beat Brevard County to win the series two games to one.
Lambert (3-0) allowed only one run in five innings of work while striking out four. With one out in the fourth, Lambert walked Jeff Eure. Eure and advanced to third base on two wild pitches from Lambert, and scored on a single be Lou Palmisano to give Brevard County the early lead.
The Cardinals fought back in the bottom of the inning to take the lead for good. Haerther hit a one-out double to left center, and Matt Dryer followed with a two-run home run to left, his team-leading fifth of the season.
In the fifth, the Cardinals added a third run on a double by Brendan Ryan. The score remained 3-1 until the eighth inning when the Manatees scored once in the top of the frame. The Cardinals again had the answer, though, scoring four times in the bottom of the inning.
Ryan led off with a walk. Haerther belted his second double of the game, which plated Ryan. An out later, Ty Parker beat out what seemed to be a routine grounder to shortstop for an infield single. Terry Evans and Anthony Monegan followed with doubles of their own to make the score 7-2. Monegan was thrown out trying to stretch his hit into a triple for the second out. Matt Pagnozzi added a double as well.
The Cardinals bullpen was once again effective, allowing only two runs in four innings. Scott Schweitzer allowed an unearned run in the eighth, and Mark Worrell gave up a leadoff home run in the ninth.
The Cardinals welcome the Daytona Cubs to town starting Wednesday night at 7:05.
