"Cardinals rally late, but fall short against Vargas, Hammerheads

JUPITER, FL – The Palm Beach Cardinals scored three times in the bottom of the ninth but could not overcome an early deficit and fell to the Hammerheads 4-3 on Wednesday night.

Matt Demarco drew a walk off Hammerheads reliever Derek Tillman to start the ninth. Ty Parker followed with an RBI-triple – a ball that was misplayed by right fielder Angel Molina.

With John Santor batting, Tillman threw a slider up and in that went over the head of Santor, and home plate umpire Daniel Bellino wasted no time in ejected Tillman.

Hammerheads shortstop Todd Brock had been hit by a pitch earlier in the game by Cardinals starter Tyler Adamczyk.

Santor ended up drawing a walk off new Hammerheads pitcher Carlos Martinez.

Terry Evans followed with a single to score Parker. Pinch-hitter Tony McQuade moved Santor to third and Evans to second on a sacrifice bunt, and then Calvin Hayes brought home Santor on a groundout to second base. Martinez retired Rayner Laya on a pop out to second base to end the game.

Hammerheads starter Jason Vargas gave up just three hits in six shutout innings to earn the win. Vargas (2-1) also struck out eight Cardinals hitters while walking only two.

Tyler Adamczyk suffered the loss for Palm Beach. Adamczyk (2-6) last just 4 1/3 innings and gave up three runs on nine hits and three walks. Roberto Batista kept the Cardinals in the game by allowing just one run in 3 2/3 innings of relief, but in the end the Cardinals fell just short.

The Cardinals look to even the series at a game a piece on Thursday night at 7:05."
