Wednesday: Springfield 15, Frisco 1

The John Brayfield Report on the Springfield AA Cardinals

The Springfield Cardinals handed the Frisco RoughRiders a brutal whipping Wednesday night as they came away from Dr. Pepper / 7 UP Field with a 15-1 win.

The Cards began the rout early by taking a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Lead-off batter Shaun Boyd walked to open the game and Rick Ankiel drove him home with an RBI double. Travis Hanson drove Ankiel home with an RBI double and then scored from third on an RBI ground-out by Aaron Herr.

Frisco starter Nick Masset (5-10) held the Cards to three runs through five innings and was replaced in the sixth by RoughRider reliever Steven Rowe who gave up a three-run homer to Shaun Boyd to make it 6-0, and a grand slam to Gabe Johnson to make it 10-0.

Stuart Pomeranz (3-5), who had his best start of the season, pitched 7.2 innings, gave up eight hits, no walks, seven strike-outs and one run in the eighth to end his chances for a shut-out. Andy Cavazos and Joe Nelson combined for the final 1.1 innings of scoreless relief.

The Cards put the lid on the game when they scored five runs in the ninth. Shaun Boyd hit a two-run double to make it 12-1, Rick Ankiel hit a two-run homer to center to make it 14-1 and Aaron Herr hit a home run to make it 15-1.

The Cards are now 6.5 games back of Arkansas in the Texas League East Division, and 19-26 for the second half of the season with 24 games left to play--five of those at home with Arkansas in the final series of the season.

The Good News: Shaun Boyd now has five home runs for the season and four of those have come on the current road trip. Aaron Herr hit his 20th home run of the year on Wednesday to lead the team in homers. Rick Ankiel appears to be getting the hang of clutch-batter, hitting his second long ball of the season. Gabe Johnson's grand slam was his fourth homer of the year--all coming on the current road trip. And for the first time this season, every starting player had at least one of Springfield's 18 hits on the night.
