Sunday Cardinals Training Room Update

Brian Walton reports on injury status of Cardinals players Mark Mulder, Reggie Sanders, Mark Grudzielanek and John Rodriguez straight from Tony La Russa and Head Trainer Barry Weinberg.

First of all, here are La Russa's direct comments about Mark Mulder's status and when he'll pitch again.

I caught up with Cardinals Head Trainer Barry Weinberg before the game.

Grudzielanek: Ready to go and in the starting line-up Sunday.

Rodriguez: His foot is fine after banging it on the base of the wall Saturday.

Mulder: Much better movement in his neck today. Want to err on conservative side. Want to ensure he doesn't alter mechanics trying to compensate and cause more problems. Mulder will follow regular routine just as normal the day after he pitches – leg work, throw on side, etc. Just a stiff neck, but for the press, he gave us a technical term – cervical thoratic spasm.

Sanders: Didn't get a chance to work out on Saturday due to rain. (Actually, I saw Sanders and Grudz working out after the game.) Swinging just fine, but still hasn't run on bases. Needs to build running strength back before ready. Fracture healed. TLR decision on whether he will come back as pinch hitter or wait until totally ready to play. Will err on conservative side. Does not agree with TLRs mention of 9/1 as a possible return. Doubts Sanders will play on current road trip, but sees continued progress.
