Arizona Fall League Opens Tuesday

All the information you need to follow seven Cardinals prospects playing in Arizona, with a special subscription-only audio clip of Cards Player Development Director Bruce Manno talking about his charges.

The Arizona Fall League, owned and operated by Major League Baseball, begins its 14th season today, Tuesday, October 4 and the regular season continues through November 10.

This year, 36 former first-round draft picks will be among the players participating. Included is starting pitcher Chris Lambert, the Cardinals' first-round 2004 draft selection.

The Cardinals prospects participate as members of the Surprise Scorpions, along with peers from the organizations of the Houston Astros, Kansas City Royals, Philadelphia Phillies and Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. There are five other clubs in the League, each with 30 players drawn from six MLB organizations each.

All six of the Cardinals players were selected from the ranks of the Double-A Springfield Cardinals, with the exception of Taxi Squad player Rich Scalamandre, a reliever from Palm Beach (Single-A).

All games will take place at the Peoria Sports Complex, Surprise Stadium, Mesa's HoHoKam Stadium and Phoenix Municipal Stadium, all located in the Phoenix metro area. For those who plan to be in the area, tickets are inexpensive ($6) and readily available.

Regularly scheduled evening games have been added to the previous afternoon-only focused schedule, allowing a double daily dose for those who want to check out many of the next generation of major leaguers.

In a new capability, every AFL game can be tracked via the animated pitch-by-pitch capability provided by minorleaguebaseball.com's (a.k.a. MiLB.com's) Gameday function.

Returning in 2005 is an AFL "Game of the Day" broadcast over the internet every weekday from Opening Day through the November 12 championship game. The first Surprise Scorpions broadcast will be on Thursday, October 13 at 3pm Central time.

A full schedule of these webcasts and all items mentioned above are included on the Official AFL website.
