Meet the Crew

Biographies of the umpires selected by MLB to work the National League Championship Series between the Houston Astros and St. Louis Cardinals

Since the umpires seem to just blend into the field when they do their jobs best, here's hoping none of the men assigned to this year's National League Championship Series will become part of the story.

Yet, umpires are real people, too. So, to learn a bit about them, following are biographies of this year's crew for the series starting Wednesday night in St. Louis.

Tim McClelland – Crew Chief - #36

Major League Service Time: 22.5 Years

Career: Joined the Major League staff in 1983...has worked the All-Star Game (1986, 98, 2003), Division Series (1997, 2000, 02, 04), League Championship Series (1988, 95, 99, 2001, 03) and World Series (1993, 2000, 02)...was part of first joint committee on training and helped to collaborate the first-ever Major League umpire manual...was behind the plate for David Wells' perfect game in 1998...previously umpired in the Florida State League (1976-77), Florida Instructional League (1976, 78), Southern League (1978), American Association (1979-82) and Puerto Rican Winter League (1979-80).

Personal: Timothy Reid McClelland…born on December 12, 1951 in Jackson, MI...currently resides in West Des Moines, IA...married Sandy (10/16/82)…has three children…a 1970 graduate of Parkside High School…received a B.A. in Recreation and Youth Leadership (1974) and a M.A. in Intramural Administration (1975) from Michigan State University…played semi-pro baseball…became interested in umpiring by officiating intramural competitions at Michigan State…enjoys playing golf.

Greg Gibson - #53

Major League Service Time: 6 Years

Career: Joined the Major League staff in 1999...worked the Division Series in 2001, 2003, and 2004...previously umpired in the Appalachian League (1991), Florida Instructional League (1991 and 1994), South Atlantic League (1992), Florida State League (1993), Eastern League (1994-95) and International League (1996-99).

Personal: Gregory Allan Gibson...born on October 2, 1968 in Ironton, OH...currently resides in Catlettsburg, KY...married Michelle (10/7/95)...has three children: Kyle, Cameron and Carter...attended the University of Kentucky and Shawnee State University...proudest moment as an umpire was working the plate in Cincinnati for the first time in 1997.

Wally Bell - #35

Major League Service Time: 12 Years

Career: Joined the Major League staff in 1993...has umpired the All-Star Game (1997, 2000), the Division Series (1998, 99, 03-04) and the League Championship Series (2000, 01)...previously worked in the International League, Triple-A Alliance, Dominican Republic League, Southern League, Carolina League, South Atlantic League and New York-Penn League...proudest moment as a Major League umpire was returning to the field after having open heart surgery in 1999.

Personal: Wallace Robert Bell...Born on January 10, 1965 in Ravenna, OH...currently resides in Canfield, OH...has two children: Jason Patrick (8/10/99) and Lindsey Jane (9/27/00)...does charity work for the American Heart Association...hobbies include golf and fishing.

Phil Cuzzi - #20

Major League Service Time: 6 Years

Career: Joined the Major League staff in 1999...has worked the Division Series the last two years (2003-04)...previously umpired in the New York-Penn League, Carolina League, South Atlantic League, Southern League, Triple-A Alliance, International League, American Association, Florida State League and Eastern League...was the home plate umpire for Bud Smith's no-hitter on September 3, 2001.

Personal: Philip Cuzzi...Born on August 29, 1955 in Newark, NJ...raised in Belleville, NJ...currently resides in Nutley, NJ...married Gilda Foti (10/13/95)...played baseball and football at Belleville High School... participates in community work as a member of the Italian Fiorenti Club in New Jersey...involved with the ALS 2003, started the Robert Luongo ALS Fund which raises funds for Mr. Luongo's daughter's education as well as the ALS Association.

Larry Poncino - #39

Major League Service Time: 13 Years

Career: Joined the Major League staff in 1993... worked the 1996 Midsummer Classic and the League Championship Series (1998, 2003)...previously umpired in the California League (1977), Texas League (1978-79) and Pacific Coast League (1980-92).

Personal: Larry Louis Poncino…born on February 3, 1957 in Los Angeles, CA...currently resides in Tuscon, AZ...married Jo Ann Thibert (10/24/92)…graduated from San Clemente High School in 1975…attended the University of Nevada Reno (1975-76)...Co-Chair of One on One Partners Golf Charity (1998-2000)...San Clemente City Golf Champ (1986).

Gerry Davis - #12

Major League Service Time: 21 Years

Career: Joined the Major League staff in 1985...has worked the All-Star Game (1989, 97, 2002), Division Series (1996, 99, 2002-04), League Championship Series (1990, 92, 95, 98, 2000, 01) and World Series (1996, 99, 2004)...attended the Al Somers Umpire School (1976)...previously worked in the Midwest League (1976-77), Eastern League (1978), American Association (1978-82), Florida Instructional League (1977-78) and Puerto Rico Winter League (1979).

Personal: Gerald Sidney Davis…Born on February 22, 1953 in St. Louis, MO...currently resides in Appleton, WI...married Lynn (10/9/80)…has one child: Jeremy (3/26/91)…is active with the Big Brothers/Big Sisters and the Make-A-Wish Foundation…was named the 1994 BBWAA Umpire of the Year by the St. Louis Chapter…played semi-pro baseball in the St. Louis area…owns Gerry Davis Sports, which supplies apparel and equipment to amateur officials…proudest moment as a Major League umpire was working behind the plate for Game Six of the 1996 World Series…conducts umpire clinics in the offseason…enjoys playing golf and attending his son's sporting events.
