Six different Springfield Cardinals from the 2005 inaugural season are still going strong in the Arizona Fall League. Third baseman Travis Hanson, outfielder Cody Haerther, catcher Gabe Johnson, as well as pitchers Cory Doyne, Andy Cavazos and Rich Scalamandre are all members of the Surprise Scorpions.
The Arizona Fall League is composed of six different teams, with every Major League team getting an opportunity to send six prospects to gain further experience. In addition to St. Louis Cardinals players, the Surprise Scorpions' roster is comprised of top players from the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, the Philadelphia Phillies, the Houston Astros and the Kansas City Royals.
After charging out of the gate at 5-0, the Scorpions are now 10-6, sporting the second best record in the six-team AFL. The season runs from early October into mid-November.
Travis Hanson is having the best run of the three Cardinals position players, hitting over .400 over the first two weeks. Hanson's average currently stands at .300 with a home run and three RBI's in 12 games.
Andy Cavazos is enjoying the most success of the three Red Birds' pitchers, posting a 1-0 mark with an ERA of 1.80 in five appearances.
Other Texas Leaguers on the Surprise roster include Howie Kendrick of the Arkansas Travelers, who is currently second in the league in hitting at .426 with two homers and 11 RBI's in 15 games. Angels' 20-year-old prospect Brandon Wood, who led Minor League Baseball this year with 43 home runs and should be headed for Arkansas in 2006, currently leads the Arizona Fall League with 10 round-trippers in 15 games.
Texas League MVP Andre Ethier and former Cardinals' farm-hand Daric Barton, both of whom played for the Texas League Champion Midland RockHounds in 2005, are in the AFL playing for the Phoenix Desert Dogs. Ethier is second on the Desert Dogs' roster with an average of .386 with one home run and 12 RBIs in 13 games. Barton, who was traded to Oakland as part of the Mark Mulder deal, is batting .275 with one homer and eight RBI's in 12 games.
