AFL Saturday – Scorpions 11, Rafters 9

Brian Walton reports on Cardinals prospects in Arizona Fall League action.

On Saturday afternoon, the Scottsdale Scorpions defeated the Grand Canyon Rafters by a 11-9 score at Surprise Stadium. Their season record now sits at 15-13, good for first place in the Arizona Fall League's American Division.

Gabe Johnson was the only Cardinals starter in Satruday's line-up. He caught and batted eighth until he was replaced by Oriole farmhand Ryan Hubele in the sixth.

Cody Haerther entered the game in right field in the top of the sixth and played the remainder of the game.

Here's a brief summary.

Scorpions second. Johnson hit a shot to second base. The Rafters' second sacker, Texas' Drew Meyer, tried to backhand the ball, but it went past him into centerfield. Johnson moved up to second base, but was stranded there.

Scorpions third. With two down, Johnson flied out to left to end the inning.

Scorpions fifth. With the score 8-2 in favor of the Scorpions, Johnson came up with two outs and the bases empty. He fanned swinging.

Scorpions sixth. With the score now 8-8, one out with the bases empty, Haerther stepped in. He took a called strike three. However, shortly thereafter, a two-run home run put the Scorpions back out in front.

Scorpions seventh. Haerther struck out swinging with two out and the bases empty.

Johnson – 0-for-3 with a strikeout

Haerther – 0-for-2 with two strikeouts
