Cardinal: Selected in the first round (13th overall) of the June, 2000 First-Year Player Draft. Received a $1,750,000 signing bonus.
JS (32): "Boyd is due to be a six-year minor league free agent after this upcoming season, so this may be his last chance to make it to the big leagues with the team that drafted him in the first round back in 2000. An outstanding spring training could earn him a ticket to St. Louis, but I see him beginning the season at Memphis with a call-up later in the year if he continues to progress, as it seems he did last season at Springfield."
LM (NR): "I had a difficult time deciding on the numbers 31 through 40 prospects. Boyd could easily have made my list but did not as I went with newer draftees that I felt had a better year. It was a toss up."
RM (NR): "It wasn't that long ago (2002), that Shaun Boyd was ranked by Baseball America as one of the Cardinals Top 20 prospects. Of course at that time he was playing second base. I doubt that with Boyd playing in the outfield that he will ever get past playing time at AAA Memphis. Ranked here at #40, it's unlikely that he'll be on this list next season, let alone move up."
BW (40): "As I juggled my names, Boyd seemed to drop further and further down the page every time. Honestly, I really wanted to leave him off, because I am tired of waiting for Boyd to do something. In 2003, Baseball America had him at #6. Boyd couldn't handle second base, so he moved to the outfield. Where are those five tools, anyway? The only reason he didn't drop below #40 is because he is a former first-rounder, which I readily admit is a bad reason."
