JS (36): "Smith underwent shoulder capsule surgery in August. It will be interesting to see if he is ready to go by Spring Training. 2006 will be a big year if Smith is going to rise on the prospect charts. Another year similar to 2005 could remove him from any lists. He pitched alongside Detroit Tigers top prospect Justin Verlander at Old Dominion and, when healthy, is said to be a strike-throwing bulldog on the mound, which was clearly not the case in 2005."
LM (NR): "Smith's '05 season lasted one month and six days, from May 29th to July 3rd, when he went on the disabled list. Starting late and finishing early, whatever the reason, kept him off my list. A strong '06 will easily change that omission."
RM (40): "Ranked as the 14th-best prospect in the Cardinals system by Baseball America prior to the season, Smith didn't fare as high on our 2006 Top 40 Prospect list. Like I have said before, I have some doubts about all these pitching prospects in the system. Smith had an exceptional college career and he has the tools to move up and I expect he will in 06. I wouldn't be surprised to see him playing at (H-A) Palm Beach by the end of the season, I just think it is a little early to rank him so high."
BW (35): "I really wanted to rank Smith higher. If only he would give me that confidence by demonstrating his fourth-round talent on the mound. However, with only five starts and 24 innings pitched in 2005, it was basically a lost season for the former Old Dominion right-hander. Let's revisit after 2006."
