THE ST. LOUIS CARDINALS opened their 115th season of play in the National League with a 13-5 win Monday...they play the second of three games with the Phillies tonight...the Cardinals will take part in three Opening Day ceremonies as they play Chicago this weekend for three games for the Cubs season opener Friday...the new Busch Stadium will host it's inaugural game Monday, April 10 vs. MIL.

TONIGHT'S GAME: The St. Louis Cardinals play the Philadelphia Phillies in the second of a three game series tonight...the two teams will play six times this year as the Phillies travel to St. Louis 8/1-3...the Redbirds struggled last season against PHI going 2-4 and winning just one game both at home and here in Philadelphia...

RECENT REDBIRDS: The Redbirds posted a 15-14-1 spring training record as the club completed its ninth spring in Jupiter, Fla...the team wrapped up the spring exhibition schedule with three straight vs. the NY lets, losing two of three games...Mark Mulder led the club with three wins, while Chris Carpenter touted the best ERA among starters at 1.01...Jason Isringhausen did not allow an earned run all spring and just one run total...Chris Duncan led St. Louis with 21 hits followed closely by David Eckstein with 20...Albert Pujols' 13 RBI with five home runs led in those categories.

ABOUT THE OPENER:The Cardinals defeated PHI 13-5 and scattered 17 hits in the game...starter Chris Carpenter earned his first win of the season in 5.0 innings of work allowing four runs...every starter had a hit and a run, including Aaron Miles who went 4-5 with two doubles and a triple...Scott Rolen capped an eight-run fourth inning with a grand slam while Albert Pujols had two home runs.

INJURY UPDATE:John Rodriguez was diagnosed with a left shoulder contusion and is day-to-day...he collided with the leftfield wall in the first inning Fri. at spring training, further injuring a shoulder that caused him to miss several days at the beginning of spring.

THE SEASON TILT: St. Louis picked up the win Monday in the first Opening game between the two clubs since 1995...total, the two teams have played six season opening games with the Cardinals holding a 4-2 edge...St. Louis has now started a season on the road twice against Philadelphia, winning both games...ironically enough, the last time the Cards opened a new stadium (1966) the season opener that year was also against the Phils...opening dates and results between the two teams are in the chart at right.

NEW GUYS MAKE A DENT: Five Cardinals made the Opening Day roster for the first time in their careers in Josh Hancock, John Rodriguez, Skip Schumaker, Brad Thompson and Adam Wainwright ...Hancock and Rodriguez joined seven teammates new to the St. Louis roster compared with this time last year...Gary Bennett, Juan Encarnacion, Braden Looper, Aaron Miles, Sidney Ponson, Ricardo Rincon and

Scott Spiezio were all on other teams last season...seven of the above mentioned players saw action in Monday's game with a combined 6-12 day at the plate by four position players, including Miles' 4-5 day...Hancock, Wainwright and Thompson pitching the final 2.2 scoreless innings.
