Calvin Hayes, a former third round pick in the 2003 draft from Salisbury, North Carolina. Hayes has been placed on the Restricted List by the Cardinals, and will have to apply for retirement before being placed on the Voluntary Retirement List. Through 17 games this season, the second baseman was hitting .137.
Hayes hit .304 with the Peoria Chiefs in 2004, then St. Louis' Midwest League affiliate. After starting the 2005 season with the High-A Palm Beach Cardinals, he would eventually suit up for Quad Cities (.242 in 28 games) and New Jersey of the New York-Penn League while hitting .220 overall.
Starting pitcher, Josh Wilson, a second round pick in the 2005 draft, has been activated and will start Friday night in the series finale against the Beloit Snappers, the St. Louis Cardinals announced Friday. Wilson will take the roster spot of Calvin Hayes, who has begun taking the necessary steps towards retirement.
