Cards Sign Another Draft Pick

Will Groff, a second baseman was named to The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Baseball All-Conference team for the 2006 season and was the conference's 2006 Player of the Year.

The St. Louis Cardinals signed Will Groff, their 2006, 29th-round draft pick to a 2007 contract this week.

"You only sign once and this was jus the opportunity of a lifetime," Groff said.

Groff injured his left hand in a Cortland State playoff game in late May and had surgury to insert a two-inch metal plate and five screws on May 31, contributing to the delay in signing him to a deal.

In 46 games for the Cortland Red Dragons, Groff led the SUNYAC league in hits (77), runs scored (54), total bases (103) and finished second in the league in hitting with a .464 batting average and stolen bases (29-39).

Groff will either report to instructional league at the Cardinals' facilty in Jupiter, Fla., in mid-September or to 2007 Cardinals spring training. Right now, Groff said he's 99 percent sure he will report to instructional league.
