Palm Beach Cardinals Lose Opener

The Palm Beach Cardinals, the 2005 Florida State League Champions lost to the St. Lucie Mets Tuesday night by a score of 6-4 in the opener of the best-of-three FSL playoff series.

Palm Beach starter Jaime Garcia (0-1) surrendered four runs on six hits over 3 1/3 innings. He struck out one and walked one.

Luis Cotto went 3-for-4 with an RBI and Rayner Laya also drove in a run for the Cardinals, who totaled six hits.

St. Lucie Mets starter, Jose Sanchez went six strong innings for the win, allowing only one run on two hits with one strikeout.

The Mets took the early lead with a run in the first and the Cardinals responded with one in the third to tie the game, but the Mets came right back in the fourth to score three runs and from that point they never surrendered the lead. The final score 6-4, putting the defending champions in the hole.

Going into the series the Cardinals felt confident they could handle the Mets, in that they had defeated them three out of four games in August.

Game 2 is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET on Wednesday at Tradition Field.
