Minor League Player/Pitcher of the Month

Two of the Cardinals' top prospects earn honors for the month of August.

Nick Stavinoha of Double-A Springfield was the Cardinals Player of the Month for August. He batted .330 with seven home runs and 27 RBI for the month.

Mike Sillman was named Pitcher of the Month. The Palm Beach (A) closer recorded 10 saves in 12 August outings, allowing one earned run in 11.2 innings (0.77 ERA) while walking four and fanning 20.

Stavinoha was originally selected in the seventh round of the June, 2005 First-Year Player Draft.

Last season Stavinoha began his pro career at low Class A Quad Cities, hitting .344/.398/.564 with 14 home runs and 53 RBI in 65 games and was named the Birdhouse 2005 Minor League Player of the Year as a result.

Sillman was selected in the twenty-first round of the June 2004 First-Year Player Draft.

This season Sillman led the Florida State League with 35 saves and was lights-out in 57 games. His final ERA was 1.10, and he allowed just 34 hits in 57.1 innings, holding opponents to a paltry .167 batting average. He had a strike out-to-walk ratio of better than 4 to 1, striking out 86 while walking just 20. His home ERA was a microscopic 0.56 in 30 games.

He was the only member of the Cards to be named an to the FSL Mid-Season and Post-Season All-Star team.
