World Series Game 1 – Sat. 10/21 – Cards 7-2

The St. Louis Cardinals took the first game of the World Series by defeating the Detroit Tigers by a 7-2 score at Tiger Stadium on Saturday night. Anthony Reyes pitched into the ninth inning, retiring 17 in a row and Albert Pujols made the Tigers pay when pitching to him, hitting a two-run home run.

Starting pitcher Anthony Reyes made the biggest big game performance of his young career by pitching into the ninth inning. He allowed two runs on just four hits and one walk. He fanned four. Braden Looper finished up.

Scott Rolen's solo shot put the Cards on the board in the second inning and he also doubled. Albert Pujols' two-run shot in the third was the big blow. Chris Duncan, Juan Encarnacion and Jim Edmonds added RBI.

Why the Tigers pitched to him with first base open will be a question asked to Jim Leyland over and over. Cards 4-1.

Encarnacion's fielders' choice scored Edmonds as Inge committed a fielding error and a throwing error, allowing Rolen to come home after the two collided between third and home. It was called interference. Cards 7-1.

Tigers sixth – Another stopper
Three more down.

Cards seventh – In order
Duncan fanned again for the second out of a 1-2-3 inning.

Tigers seventh – In control
Guillen singled with one out to end Reyes' streak at 17.
