Spring Training Notebook - 03/07

The St. Louis Cardinals star center fielder Jim Edmonds will likely start the season on the 15 day DL.

The St. Louis Cardinals list of injuries continues to grow at an alarming rate.

SS David Eckstein - (03/01/07 mild rib cage soreness not related to a specific injury), the team thinks Eckstein could be ready to play by as early as this weekend, it is very likely he may not play for another week.

OF Jim Edmonds – (11/15/06 shoulder surgery, 01/09/07 toe surgery), if Edmonds was only dealing with his shoulder surgery there would be a good chance he could be ready by opening day. He has started hitting off the tee and he's playing catch during morning workouts. His toe surgery is delaying his return and it is almost certain that he'll start the season on the 15 day DL.

OF Juan Encarnacion – (12/15/06 offseason wrist surgery), the expectation is that Juan will be ready by opening day, he has yet to appear in a Grapefruit League game this spring. He'll likely face live pitching for the first time in about a week and could appear in a game by the third week of March.

OF Cody Haerther - (02/26/07 bruise wrist), hurt his wrist in the Cardinals exhibition game with the Florida Atlantic University, he hasn't appeared in a Grapefruit League game. Not expected to play in any games this week.

RP Jason Isringhausen (recuperating from hip 09/06 surgery), health wise the Cardinals closer threw well on Tuesday, struggled with his control, expected to be ready by opening day, my take is he is being rushed backed from this surgery and it would be more realistic to expect him back in early May.

2B Adam Kennedy – (02/25/07 twinge/muscle strain in right side), completed live batting practice Tuesday, not expected to play on Wednesday's road game against the Los Angeles Dodgers. He has not played in a game yet this spring. Day to day.

RP Josh Kinney - (03/05/07 suffering from a possible strained flexor tendon near the elbow), has struggles through his first two appearances this spring, it now appears that Kinney is injured, according to a report by Joe Strauss of the St. Louis Post Dispatch, Kinney had an MRI on Tuesday, results and additional information should be available on Wednesday.

SP Mark Mulder – (09/06/06 rotator cuff surgery) rehab is progressing as anticipated, Mulder hopes to be back by May, whereas the team thinks a June or July timetable for his return is more realistic.

RP Russ Springer - (02/28/07 experiencing some soreness in his ribcage), threw a bullpen session Tuesday, is not expected to face hitters this week.

OF Preston Wilson - (03/02/07 mild tendinitis in his right biceps), missed a couple of games, expected to be in the lineup Wednesday, consider him day to day.
