Cards Minors Spring Working Rosters: 03/26/07

St. Louis Cardinals minor league spring training working roster update as of Monday, March 26. There are several interesting player moves to report, including A.J. Van Slyke, Donnie Smith and Brandon Yarbrough.

Since our last installment of St. Louis Cardinals spring training minor league working rosters on March 20, there have been a number of small moves, mostly down in the system, plus a handful of especially-interesting ones.

In the past week, the Cardinals have shifted 21 pitchers down a level in the organization, at least on their working rosters. In some cases, the player made his second move of the spring as the rosters are refined both to reflect results on the field and the ripple effect of major league returnees.

Additional shifts are expected. After all, what is Springfield manager Pop Warner going to do with eight outfielders? Still, these rosters are looking more and more like what we should see come Opening Day next week. Changes since last report are noted in bold text.

For position players, only five players dropped down a level since last time – catcher David Carpenter, infielder Isa Garcia and outfielders Amaury Cazana Marti, Cody Haerther and Daryl Jones.

Among the most notable changes was a single upward move earned across the system as outfielder A.J. Van Slyke joined Palm Beach from Quad Cities. Van Slyke is batting a lusty .464/.531/.536 (BA/OBP/SLG) this spring. The 23-year-old joined the Cardinals in the 23rd round of the 2005 draft.

Another move of interest was within a roster, as former fourth-round pick (in 2004) Donnie Smith shifted from starting to the Palm Beach bullpen. The 24-year-old pitched in A ball for State College and Quad Cities in 2006. The right-hander was primarily a reliever for Old Dominion University from 2002 through 2004. Smith has allowed four earned runs in 6 1/3 spring innings.

Finally, Brandon Yarbrough moved out from behind the plate, joining Van Slyke and the others in Palm Beach's outfield scrum. The 22-year-old was the Cards' fifth-round selection in the 2003 draft and is a career .260 hitter in four minor league seasons. He is batting .273 on the spring.
