Roth Opts for Retirement

Unhappy with his assignment to high Class A Palm Beach, Randy Roth has decided to retire.

Unhappy with an assignment to High-A Palm Beach, Cardinals' prospect Randy Roth left camp last week and was left with three options: to return, to be placed on the suspended/restricted list or to retire. Unfortunately, he chose the latter. He apparently did not agree with the organization's decision to name six-year minor league veteran Joe Mather as the starting first baseman for Double-A Springfield, believing that this is what kept him held back at Palm Beach.

Ranked as the Cardinals' No. 34 prospect here at the Birdhouse over the offseason, Roth hit .260/.315/.380 this spring. The 25-year-old split last season between Low-A Quad Cities and Palm Beach. In two seasons since the Cardinals gave him a $2,000 signing bonus as a tenth round draft pick, he had hit .298/.347/.505 between four levels.
