Cards 5/5 Interviews – TLR, Kip, Carp, Brad

Following Saturday's drubbing at the hands of Houston, Cards newsmakers spoke from Busch Stadium – the manager, the struggling 1-6 starter, the injured ace and the replacement rotation member to-be.

Tony La Russa discussed two losses – that of the 13-0 skunking by the Astros on Saturday that perhaps can be washed away in 24 hours and another that will last much longer - the three-month period Chris Carpenter is expected to be out after elbow surgery.

Kip Wells tried to explain what happened during his third straight poor outing – a period during which his ERA has more than doubled - from a respectable 3.12 to an awful 6.59.

Chris Carpenter was next, laying out his decision to undergo elbow surgery, scheduled to be performed by Dr. George Paletta on Tuesday.

Brad Thompson was named by La Russa to be his replacement starting pitcher on Tuesday. Given all the circumstances surrounding his team, it was easy to understand why Brad didn't seem too excited to talk about getting the ball. His only other MLB start was a bullpen game May 24, 2006. Thompson also had 25 minor league starts in the Cardinals system, including a 57 2/3 inning scoreless streak in Double-A.
