The Springfield Cardinals Report – Week Seven

Our exclusive weekly report on the 2007 edition of the Double-A Springfield Cardinals of the Texas League from our on-site beat reporter, John Brayfield.

There is hope in Cardinal Nation after all. I know it seems like the team that cheered after a World Series victory last year is playing like a team that might be resigned to having to play on the western side of the state, but there is some light at the end of the dark tunnel of endless losing streaks and winless battles.

We hear talk of "rebuilding" and that is not a bad idea. Though it seems that taking the field on opening day with the team that won it all last year would be your best bet for a repeat, it just didn't happen that way.

But, the Cardinals do have some young talent just itching to take the field at Busch and it goes as deep as Double-A.

The Springfield Cardinals right now find themselves in second place in the Texas League North Division, 2.5 games behind Tulsa and 4.5 games in front of Wichita, after an impressive 8-1 thrashing of San Antonio on Thursday (May 24) night in Texas. This was the second straight win for Springfield and the third straight series win for them as well. They are 7-3 on a 15-day road trip and are set to play Corpus Christi for the final three-game series. The Cards are just one game under .500 at 21-22.

The good news for fans is that several
Springfield players have come on strong and have made some outstanding contributions to the team and the win column. In Thursday night's game, Colby Rasmus who earlier had a 12-day hitting streak, went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored, Tyler Greene was 4-for-5 with one RBI and four runs scored.; lead-off man Sean Danielson went 1-for-5 but scored twice in the game; Joe Mather hit his Texas League-leading 12th home run and took the team RBI lead with his 27th of the season; Mitchell Boggs got his second win in as many tries and Matt Scherer picked up his first save of the year. Now, that sounds like teamwork.

Springfield team and others have seen a few transactions as of late. The return of starting pitcher Stewart Pomeranz to Hammons Field should be announced soon. The following is an update on 2007 Springfield-related player moves as of May 24:
