Cards Minors Starters of the Month: July 2007

The Birdhouse recognizes the top starting pitching performances in ten categories across the St. Louis Cardinals minor league system. Nick Additon is our overall top starting pitcher for the month of July, 2007.

It is time to recognize those pitchers leading the entire St. Louis Cardinals minor league system in various categories. We let you know the top five in each category. The starter listed first at each level is that team's ‘Team Leader'. If a team does not have a pitcher in the top five, a team leader is designated with a ‘TL'. To qualify for consideration, a starter must have one inning pitched per game played for that month and have had the majority of his game appearances come in a starting role. The only exceptions are at the short-season squads with their tandem rotations which limited the number of available starter innings. In their case, each member of the tandem rotation must be within one inning of the ‘one inning pitched per game played for that month' total.

A list of qualifying and non-qualifying pitchers is included at the end. Those pitchers changing teams during the month are first listed by the team with which they ended the month with their initial team listed subsequently. Their stats are combined. Something stood out when looking at the July qualifiers. Batavia and Johnson City each had two qualifying pitchers from their tandem rotations. That total of two from each squad matched the number of qualifiers at Palm Beach and exceeded the number at Quad Cities which both have five-man rotations. There were some starters at full-season A which were not going very deep into the game. (No pitcher from the GCL Cardinals met the minimum innings pitched criteria so are listed as ‘Team Leaders' only.)

Methodology for Choosing the Overall Winner
The top five in each of the nine categories were ranked numerically one through five with the team leader being noted only if that team did not have a representative in the top five. For July there were 14 qualifying starters that placed in the top five in at least one category. No starter placed in the top five in all nine categories but there were three pitchers that ranked in at least five of the nine categories, all in their first professional season. Those were the finalists. And the winner is…

Starter of the Month for July 2007 –
LHP Nick Additon, Johnson City Cardinals
7 G, 5 GS, 0 CG, 1-0, 1 SV, 30.1 IP, 26 H, 7 R, 6 ER, 3 HR, 2 HB, 3 BB, 33 SO, 1.78 ERA, 2.81 dERA, 0.96 WHIP, 11:1 K/BB, 9.8 K/9 IP, 0.9 BB/9 IP, .222 BAA, .284 BABIP, 0.63:1 GO/FO

19-year-old Nick Additon is a draft-and-follow signee in his first professional baseball season. Addition was drafted in the 47th-round of the June 2006 First-Year Player Draft and signed to a contract in May 2007. He is part of Johnson City's eight-man tandem rotation which can make it difficult to get innings and make yourself known. That is likely to change if he continues his July performance.

Additon ranked in seven of the nine categories and was Johnson Cities' team leader in innings pitched. He was either first or second in six of the seven categories in which he was ranked. Additon had the best WHIP and strike-out-to-walk ratio in the minors for July. The only category in which he did not factor was ground-out-to-fly-out ratio. This is a good start to his professional career.

Honorable Mention
RHP Jess Todd, Batavia Muckdogs
7 G, 4 GS, 0 CG, 3-0, 28.2 IP, 21 H, 6 R, 3 ER, 0 HR, 0 HB, 9 BB, 36 SO, 0.94 ERA, 1.68 dERA, 1.05 WHIP, 4:1 K/BB, 11.3 K/9 IP, 2.8 BB/9 IP, .206 BAA, .318 BABIP, 1.05:1 GO/FO

Jess Todd put up some numbers worth noting during July. The 21-year-old ranked in six of the nine qualifying categories. He did not rank in walks-per-nine-innings pitched, ground-out-to-fly-out ratio and total innings pitched, the latter due in great part to the tandem rotation at Batavia. Todd led the system in earned run average, DIPS earned run average and strikeouts-per-nine-innings pitched and was second in batting average against.

The final decision for Pitcher of the Month was between Nick Additon and Jess Todd. An excellent argument can be made for either pitcher. While Additon had better control, Todd pitched at a higher level than did Additon which may account for at least part of the difference in their control numbers. However, Todd is nearly two years older than Additon (20 months to be exact). The age difference is significant when considering the levels at which they pitched. Additon also had comparable or better numbers in all categories and is left-handed. Those three factors outweighed Todd's advantage in the level at which he pitched.

RHP Brian Broderick, Batavia Muckdogs/Johnson City Cardinals
8 G, 6 GS, 0 CG, 2-1, 36 IP, 33 H, 13 R, 10 ER, 4 HR, 2 HB, 3 BB, 22 SO, 2.50 ERA, 3.87 dERA, 1.00 WHIP, 7.3:1 K/BB, 5.5 K/9 IP, 0.75 BB/9 IP, .234 BAA, .252 BABIP, 1.58 GO/FO

Brian Broderick was drafted in the 21st round of the 2007 draft and has already received his first promotion. Broderick advanced to Batavia on July 26th after spending most of the month at Johnson City. He appeared in two games at Batavia before the month's end. Broderick ranked in five categories and was the team leader in another. The 6-foot-6 Broderick, who turns 21 in September, led the minors in fewest walks allowed for every nine innings pitched during July. He ranked second in two other categories. However, he does not have the strikeout numbers that you would like to see. Yet, his performance merited an Honorable Mention.
