The Palm Beach Cardinals Report – Week 20

Our exclusive weekly report on the 2007 edition of the Single-A Palm Beach Cardinals of the Florida State League from our on-site beat reporter in Jupiter, Jim Rutledge. Right-handed pitcher Adam Ottavino earned two of the team's six victories last week.

The Palm Beach Cardinals twice received the services of Major Leaguer Mark Mulder this past week and maybe some of his knowledge rubbed off on the other pitchers. Tyler Norrick picked up his tenth win of the year and Adam Ottavino won two this week, improving to 11-7 on the year. The Cards finished the week 6-2.

Wednesday, 08/15 - Game 1 - The Cardinals rode great pitching and four runs in the fourth to a 7-1 victory over Vero Beach.

Brandon Buckman doubled on a fly ball to left center to lead off the inning and he was driven in by a triple off the wall in right by Brandon Yarbrough that gave the Cards a 2-0 lead. Luke Gorsett made the Cards' lead a 3-0 on a single to left and was later driven in by line drive double to right for a 4-0 Cardinal lead.

Adam Ottavino (10-7) headlined a dominant outing by the Cardinals' pitching staff. Ottavino gave up one run over six solid innings to pick up the win. Jon Mikrut tossed one inning of scoreless relief, finishing the job for Ottavino.

Game 2 - The Cardinals scored five runs in the first and barely held on for a 5-4 victory, completing a doubleheader sweep of Vero Beach.

An interesting first inning was started by a walk by Jim Rapoport and subsequent steal of second. With Rapoport on third and one out, pinch hitter A.J. Van Slyke got the runner home on a misplayed grounder to second. With the Cards already leading 1-0, Chris Grossman drove in a run on a fielder's choice for a 2-0 Cardinals lead. The Cards' first earned run of the game was secured on a worm-burning ground ball single to left by Mark Shorey. A sac fly by Luke Gorsett and a fly ball error by Vero Beach gave the Cards a 5-0 lead in the first.

Trey Hearne was ok in four innings of work and Robert Ransom gave up one run in one inning pitched. Scott Vander Weg tossed a hitless sixth and picked up the win and Luke Gregerson earned his 22nd save of the year.

Thursday, 08/16 - The Cards couldn't recover from a six-run second by Vero Beach and lost 8-6.

Mark Mulder (0-1) gave up four runs in 1 1/3 innings of work and picked up the first loss of the season. Brad Furnish pitched 5 2/3 of relief and gave up four runs of which three were earned. Donnie Smith contributed two hitless innings of relief.

Palm Beach made their run in the bottom of the third, scoring five runs, two of them on a line drive to left by Allen Craig. One batter later, two more runs scored on a line drive double to left by Gorsett, to bring the Cards within two. Nathan Southard brought the Cards' within one run on a double to left, driving in Gorsett. That was as close as the Cardinals got.

Friday, 08/17 - Tyler Norrick gave up two runs and struck out six in seven innings of work. Norrick picked up his tenth win of the season as the Cards held off Daytona 6-4.

Mikrut went an inning and a third and Gregerson picked up his 23rd save after recording the final two outs against the Cubs.

In the bottom of the third, Gorsett hit a two-run homer deep to left to give the Cards a 2-0 lead. The Cards wasted back-to-back steals by Southard leaving him stranded at third. Shorey rocketed a ball deep to left for a three-run homer in the fourth.

Saturday, 08/18 - Shorey hit his second home run in as many nights and the Cardinals beat the Cubs 9-2.

The Cards did most of their damage in the bottom of the fifth and Shorey was the man who carried the big stick. The recent arrival came to bat with the bases loaded and ripped a changeup deep to right for a grand slam.

Eddie Degerman had his best outing of the season; he gave up two runs over seven dominant innings of work. Vander Weg and Michael Cooper combined to pitch two scoreless innings of relief.

Sunday, 08/19 - Hearne dropped to (4-11) and his earned run average rose   to 6.36 after the Cards were shut out 6-0 by the Cubs.

Smith and Ransom were solid in relief, combining to allow only one earned run in a combined three innings of work.

Rapoport and Van Slyke were the only two Cardinals who were able to register more than one hit against the Cubs.

Monday, 08/20, Game 1 - Ottavino got tremendous run support and the Cardinals took game one from the Devil Rays 9-2.

With the Cards down 2-0, Yarbrough bombed a ball deep to right, for a game tying two run homer. Gorsett gave the Cards' lead for good on a run-scoring single to left in the top of the sixth.

Ottavino (11-7) went five, giving up two runs on four hits and Mikrut pitched two scoreless innings to get his third save of the year.

Game 2 - Stuart Pomeranz (0-1) gave up five runs, four earned, in two and a two thirds innings and the Cards lost 6-1 to Vero Beach.

Cardinals batters were only able to register two hits against Vero Beach in one of their worst performances of the year.

Tuesday, 08/21 - Mulder looked impressive in his second rehab start with the Cards. He went four innings and gave up one unearned run on two hits as the Cards defeated Vero Beach 3-1.

Following Mulder, Furnish pitched three frames and picked up the win. Mikrut and Gregerson finished up the five scoreless relief innings, with the latter collecting his 24th save.

Van Slyke and Southard both drove in runs and Gorsett doubled twice as the Cards were able to take advantage of that solid start by Mulder.

Hot - Adam Ottavino was 2-0 this week and pitched eleven innings, giving up three runs and striking out four.

Not - Trey Hearne was 0-1 in two starts this week and gave up eight runs in ten innings of work.
