On Monday, righthander Blake Hawksworth was placed on the disabled list due to a shoulder injury, most likely ending his season. The Cardinals' top pitching prospect entering the season, Hawksworth struggled in his first taste of Triple-A. Making 25 starts, the 24-year-old went 4-13 with a 5.28 ERA. Opposing batters hit .295 against him.
Hopefully this is nothing serious, as Hawksworth missed the better part of two seasons due to a torn labrum in the same shoulder.
Last Wednesday, first baseman Mike Ferris was placed on the disabled list due to a knee injury to make room on the roster for Miguel Cairo. The 24-year-old is hitting a combined .222 with five home runs and 33 RBI between High-A Palm Beach, Double-A Springfield and Memphis this season.
On August 14, righthander Hugo Castellanos was placed on the disabled list with a shoulder injury to make room on the roster for lefthander Mike Venafro. Signed as a free agent prior to the season, Castellanos had a 2.73 ERA in a combined 45 relief appearances for Springfield and Memphis.
Palm Beach Cardinals
First baseman Brandon Buckman, who has not appeared in a game since August 15, was finally placed on the disabled list Monday due to a broken finger. The 23-year-old hit a combined .310 with 19 home runs and 79 RBI between Low-A Quad Cities and Palm Beach.
Buckman's roster spot was filled by the activation of outfielder Shane Robinson, who had been on the disabled list since June 14 due to a broken foot. Robinson hit .182 in a four-game rehab assignment with the GCL Cardinals. He was hitting .248 with 14 stolen bases in 39 games before he suffered the injury.
On Saturday, righthander Robert Ransom was placed on the disabled list to make room for Julio Sanchez, who was promoted from the Gulf Coast League. Stay tuned for an update on Ransom, as we will share when we learn more.
Swing of the Quad Cities
The reason for Carrasco's suspension was not announced. The 22-year-old is 6-2 with a 2.19 ERA in 41 appearances out of the Quad Cities bullpen this season.
Spade, who was signed by the Cardinals as a non-drafted free agent on June 14, was promoted to Johnson City after going 3-0 with a 0.75 ERA in 12 relief appearances in the Gulf Coast League. He posted a 2.25 ERA in nine relief appearances for Johnson City.
