Cardinals AFL Interviews: Luke Gregerson

Springfield Cardinals reliever Luke Gregerson is pitching for the Mesa Solar Sox of the Arizona Fall League this fall. In this exclusive audio interview, he focuses on his 2007 campaign and looks to the future.

About two weeks ago, the St. Louis Cardinals added right-handed pitcher Luke Gregerson to the roster of the Arizona Fall League's Mesa Solar Sox. The 23-year-old reliever replaced fellow reliever Kyle McClellan, who left the club for his wedding.

This season, Gregerson made 53 of his 54 2007 appearances out of the Palm Beach Cardinals' pen, before joining Double-A Springfield in September. Overall, he posted a stellar 1.94 ERA, striking out 72 and walking 20 in 65 innings. Opposing batters managed to hit just .189 against him.

As Palm Beach's closer, Gregerson, 23, converted 27 of 31 save opportunities this season. The righty, taken in the 28th round of the 2006 First-Year Player Draft, registered an out-of-this-world 2.82:1 ground out to fly out ratio. The Illinois native earned recognition as the Cardinals organization's Minor League Pitcher of the Month for August.

Gregerson did not allow a home run all season long – until he arrived in Arizona. Despite a slow start, Gregerson knows why he is in the AFL and what he needs to do to continue to improve. We discuss that and more in this exclusive audio interview.
