2008 Cardinals Photo Day: The Newcomers

Photos of a dozen players new to the St. Louis Cardinals organization since the start of last season.

Each spring, early in training camp, the Major League clubs have Photo Day. For most players, it is something to get past just as the case with so many other drills they are put through. Ultimately for fans, it is worth it, as they receive the opportunity to see their favorite players up close and personal.

Last week, the St. Louis Cardinals' Photo Day was conducted. Featured here are a dozen players new to the organization since the start of last season.

With no major league experience, Rule 5 pick up Brian Barton is among the mix of competitors for an outfield berth.

Coming off shoulder surgeries, Matt Clement is penciled into the rotation. Will he be able to answer the bell?

Over the winter, most Cardinals watchers seemed to be satisfied with the Troy Glaus for Scott Rolen trade on paper. Can the new man at third keep his feet healthy and deliver?

Cesar Izturis needs to play exceptional defense at short as his bat is suspect.

Veteran Jason LaRue has struggled with the bat in recent seasons, but has excelled in the past. He'll be backing up catcher Yadier Molina.

Outfielder Ryan Ludwick started 2007 on fire in Memphis and played well for the Cardinals upon his arrival, too. He could see 400 at-bats in 2008.

A Boston castoff, Joel Pineiro converted an 11-start late-season audition into a two-year contract over the winter and a sure rotation spot.

The younger sibling of Randy Flores, Ron Flores came over from Oakland to compete with his brother for a job.

If veteran slugger Juan Gonzalez has any gas remaining in the tank, he could claim Juan Encarnacion's old roster spot. Whether he will start in right field remains to be seen.

Originally a Cardinal, Cliff Politte is back, trying to prove his arm is healed and he can compete at the major league level again.

Ron Villone is a well-traveled left-hander who could easily claim a spot in the pen with a solid showing in March.

Non-roster invitee John Wasdin is trying to catch on as a right-handed reliever.

In addition to the above players, we have loaded onto our Scout.com Cardinals player profile pages fresh shots of many incumbent Cardinals players and coaches. In fact, over 80 photos have been added this week, including several prospects like P.J. Walters, Jaime Garcia and Amaury Marti.
