Hearne, 24, was a 28th round pick in the 2005 amateur draft. He spent last season at Palm Beach where he was 5-11 with a 5.95 ERA. Hearne started 21 of the 31 games in which he pitched and struck out 90 while walking 41 over 137.2 innings. Hearne was having a fine spring before he was roughed up in his last outing on 3/25 when he allowed five runs (four earned) in two innings of relief. He was even picked as The Birdhouse's Pitcher of The Day on March 21.
Honel, 25, was the first round pick by the White Sox in the 2001 amateur draft. He spent last season at Birmingham (Double-A). There he was 2-2 with a 5.79 ERA and started 12 of the 19 games in which he pitched. Honel allowed 52 walks and struck out 44 over 60.2 innings in 2007. He required Tommy John surgery in 2006. Honel was given a tryout by the Cardinals in February and signed to a Minor League contract the next day. His ERA in Spring Training was 12.86 in seven innings.
As the Cardinals made more roster moves this last week with Cliff Politte, Chris Perez and Hugo Castellanos being reassigned to Memphis, it caused a crunch and Hearne and Honel were requested to take a trip to the Mexican League for the summer. Pitcher Bob Zimmermann was also asked but declined and he will be on the Springfield roster.
