Ex-Cardinals Census, 2008: The Minor Leaguers

In Part Two of our St. Louis Cardinals Census, we look at where 57 former Cards are playing in the Minor Leagues.

After the 2007 season, the St. Louis Cardinals lost 14 different players to the Minor League six-year free agency. Only two (Hugo Castellanos and Rico Washington) were re-signed to contracts for the 2008 season. Various others have also been released or traded away over the off-season.

With the change in the front office (Walt Jocketty out as GM, John Mozeliak in) and the new developmental program that farm director Jeff Luhnow has set up, the team has since backed off signing the many minor league veterans as seen in the past to put more effort into developing the prospects in the farm system.

This list of 57 players includes those from past years first brought in to fill certain spots in the farm system but since traded off or released. This census also updates the whereabouts of some of the Cardinals past prospects that have now been either dealt or moved on.

The count sits at 33 different players moved from one Major League team or Minor league affiliate to another Minor League affiliate. Five players have made returns from outside independent leagues to the Major League-affiliated minors. 11 players that played in the Cardinals farm system in 2007 have found new teams to play for this season. And two players were either dealt directly or as a player to be named later in an earlier trade.
