Ex-Cardinals Census, ‘08: Outside US & Canada

In the final segment of our four-part St. Louis Cardinals census, we look at where 16 former Cards are now playing outside the United States and Canada.

The final chapter in our journey to find where former St. Louis Cardinals players have landed leads us to various leagues outside the United States and Canada. This segment takes a look at several veterans who have since passed their primes in their careers. In fact, only three of the 16 listed are still relatively young (Bellazetin, Conde and Montiel). Most of the players listed are just looking to continue playing and have apparently found there is no interest in them playing in the majors or perhaps even in the major league-affiliated minors.

Seven of the players listed made appearances with the Major League team, while the others just barely cracked or missed Triple-A Memphis with exception of the three younger players. Two were former closers for the Cardinals under the Dave Duncan and Tony La Russa regime, before the Jason Isringhausen era. One was a former Rule 5 Draft pick and another was supposed to be an added arm in the bullpen but instead spent his season on the disabled list.

The total sits at 16 at this time, with ten playing in Mexico, four in Japan, and two in Nicaragua. Only one on the list cracked the Major Leagues last season and two were in 2007 spring camps before being released. Eight ended their seasons in the MLB-affiliated minor leagues, one finished in an independent league, and six returned to the foreign leagues that employed them last season. Note that one has been released and one is on loan from the majors.

Also not included are Trey Hearne, Adam Daniels and Amaury Marti as all three are still under contract with the St. Louis Cardinals. For news on them, check out the recent article entitled, "Cardinals Mexican League Update: First Half".

This list may not include every single former Cardinals player now overseas, so if anyone runs across any additional information, feel free to post it on the premium message board here so we can update the list for the future. Sometimes the language translations also cause problems with certain sites.
