Dominican Summer League Cards Report: 06/09

After the first week of play in the 2008 Dominican Summer League, the DSL Cardinals rookie-level club sits with an 0-6 record, with inconsistent pitching and a struggling offense.

The 2008 Dominican Summer League season opened on May 31st for the Cardinals.  The team lost to the Athletics #2 team 2-1 only because of a passed ball allowed the runner to get into scoring position and score on a sacrifice fly.  After the first game, the Cards allowed seven runs each in the next three games and nine in the game following.  The team had kept within distance of tying the games but fell short each time as the bullpen could not hold on and the hitting didn't pick up.

The offense was also improving their hit production after the first game, but that all fell apart as the last two contests they were held to only four hits each time.  The Cardinals had two games postponed this week due to rain and sit at 0-6, last in the Santo Domingo North Division and five games out.

Who's Hot

Michael Avila has a hit in four of his first five games this season.  The 18-year old second baseman went 4-for-15 with one double, one triple, one RBI, two walks, two runs, one stolen base, and has struck out six times.  He is the only player on the DSL Cardinals to have a double and a triple currently, but he also leads the team with four errors.

Audris Perez has hit in three of his four games this season.  The 19-year old catcher lays claim to the only home run for the team and leads the club with a .500 SLG.  This week, he went 3-for-14 with one double, one home run, three runs, one RBI, two walks, and struck out just once.

Angel Cruz made two great starts for the DSL squad this week.  In his first start on May 31, the 20-year old starter pitched five innings, allowing only one hit, no runs and striking out three while keeping the ball on the ground.  In his second start, the righty again lasted five innings allowing three hits, no runs, three walks, and striking out seven.  He is the only starter to make two solid starts for the squad.

Alejandro Pinard made two appearances, one being a start.  The 19-year old's first appearance was in relief as he pitched 2 2/3 innings allowing two hits, one (earned) run, one walk, and striking out three.  In his second appearance, the righty was given the chance to start. On June 5th, he lasted four innings allowing four hits, four runs (one earned), one wild pitch, and striking out three.  He is currently second on the team with six strike outs.  He could be looking a spot in the Cardinals rotation.

Who's Not

Victor Ferreira has only one hit in his first 12 at-bats.  The 17-year old catcher also has one RBI, one walk, and has struck out four times on the season.  In his last game, he had some problems behind the plate as he allowed three passed balls and two stolen bases.

Walter Santos was rocked in his first and only outing this young season.  All in one game, the 18-year old lefty blew a save and allowed two hits, three (earned) runs, three walks, and a wild pitch before being pulled after 1/3 of an inning on June 6th.  His ERA sits at a team-worst 81.00 and his opponents batting average is .667.  He is currently the only Nicaraguan in the Cardinals organization.

Pedro Pena was roughed up in his first relief appearance, but has managed to calm down since.  The 17-year old's first outing was a disaster, as he pitched 1 1/3 innings allowing four hits, four runs (three earned), one hit batter, two wild pitches, and striking out one on June 1st.  But in his last outing, the lefty tossed a solid two innings, not allowing a single hit or run and striking out two.

Dominican Summer League

The DSL Cardinals have a team batting average of .187, 4th to last in the league.  When it comes to all other categories compared to the league, the DSL Cardinals sit in the bottom half.  They are just not generating any hits or runs.  The team's ERA is at 4.78 and is 8th from the bottom.  The Cards have not claimed a win and without a win there are no saves.  The staff as a whole has only given up one home run and hit only three batters, which is pretty good for the league.  All other categories they sit middle of the road comparable to the other teams in the league.

None of the Cardinals hitters rank at this time.

Angel Cruz is tied for 1st with a 0.00 ERA.
