Cardinals to Disable Wainwright

St. Louis Cardinals starter Adam Wainwright to go onto the disabled list with a sprained finger. Three other injured Cardinals to return this week – Joel Pineiro, Todd Wellemeyer and Rick Ankiel.

On Monday, the St. Louis Cardinals announced that pitcher Adam Wainwright will be placed on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to Sunday, June 8. An examination of his right middle finger earlier in the day that indicated the pitcher is suffering from a sprain to the finger. Wainwright will rest the injured finger and be re-evaluated next week, at which time the team hopes to have a better projection as to when he might be expected to return to the active roster. The team will not officially disable him until tomorrow (June 10).

The team did get favorable reports Monday on three of its other ailing players and expects pitchers Joel Pineiro, Todd Wellemeyer and outfielder Rick Ankiel to rejoin the team this week in Cincinnati.

Pineiro has been disabled since May 21 due to a right groin strain and it is likely that he will be activated from the 15-day DL at some point this week.

Wellemeyer experienced right elbow inflammation after his start last Thursday (June 5) at Washington and was diagnosed with mild olecrenon stress reaction and posterior impingement following an MRI exam. He is expected to return to the team's starting rotation this coming weekend when the Cardinals host Philadelphia.

Ankiel spent the past weekend in St. Louis where he was being treated for cellulitis of his right knee. He has been cleared to resume play and will rejoin the team for its series in Cincinnati.

"All-in-all, the news is favorable on three of the four players, and in Adam's case we are hopeful that the prescribed rest will help him to avoid any long-term absence from the rotation," said Cardinals' Vice President/General Manager John Mozeliak.
