The Memphis Redbirds Report: 6/10/08

The Redbirds are treading water at 32-32 in the Pacific Coast League as David Freese and Colby Rasmus lead the Triple-A club's offense.

Recap

After a road trip in which they lost five of eight games, the Memphis Redbirds returned home and split four games with Round Rock to move their record to 32-32 on the season. The Redbirds struggled to score runs at times, and still seem to miss promoted Joe Mather in the lineup. The lack of run scoring mixed with solid pitching has led to many close games – four of Memphis' last six games have been decided by two runs or less.

Who's Hot

Third baseman David Freese continues to drive in runs at an impressive rate. Freese has recorded 19 RBIs in his last 14 games, including at least one RBI in nine of his last 10 games. He is now third on the team with 34 RBIs. Centerfielder Colby Rasmus has found success at getting on base in recent weeks. Rasmus has reached base in 19 straight games and has hits in 13 of his last 15 games.

Both John Wasdin and Matt Scherer have been pitching well in relief as of late. Neither has allowed a run in each of their last three appearances. Starter Jaime Garcia has been impressive in the last week. In his two starts, Garcia posted a 2-0 record and a 1.98 ERA with 15 strikeouts and was named Pitcher of the Week in the Pacific Coast League as a result.

Who's Not

Infielder Brian Barden is struggling on the offensive side of things. In his last nine games, Barden is a measly 3-for-34 at the plate.

Lefty reliever Ron Flores has allowed 12 runs on 18 hits in his last 11 outings, and nearly blew the save Sunday against Round Rock. In his last 9.1 innings pitched, Jason Motte has allowed 10 runs. P.J. Walters struggled to get anybody out in his last outing, pitching only 1.2 innings and allowing nine runs in a loss to Round Rock Friday.

Who's Hurt

Starting pitcher Blake Hawksworth has been placed on the DL as of June 6 with a sprained knee. Hawksworth is currently 2-6 with a 6.22 ERA in 11 starts with Memphis.

Who's on the Move

Starter Mitchell Boggs was called up to St. Louis Friday. Boggs was 5-1 with a 3.28 ERA in 12 starts for the Redbirds. Right-hander Mike Parisi was optioned to Memphis from St. Louis. Clayton Mortensen was transferred to Memphis from Springfield to take Hawksworth's spot on the roster.

Brad Thompson began his rehab assignment with Memphis Monday, pitching 3.2 innings and giving up five hits and three earned runs. Thompson was on a pitch count and threw 52 pitches.

Pacific Coast League

Memphis is currently 32-33 and in second place in the American Northern Division, five games behind Iowa.

Nick Stavinoha is seventh in the PCL with a .342 batting average. Colby Rasmus is tied for fifth in the league with 37 walks.

Up Next

Memphis continues a four-game set with division-leading Iowa Tuesday before travelling to Round Rock to take on the Express. The Redbirds then return home for a series with Albuquerque.
